In the small town of Crownport local attorney Bill Adams is trying to break up the ring of corrupt town officials by running for mayor. The cards seemed stacked against him when he gets help from a visiting hunter who, unknown to Adams and the rest of the town, is actually vacationing supreme court justice John Josephus Grant.

Frank Morgan is a American Supreme court Justice ("John Grant") who heads off, with his secretary, on a well earned fishing trip. When he arrives in the small town of Crown Port, he soon discovers that local lawyer "Bill Adams" (Richard Carlson) is on a bit of a crusade to clean up the corrupt town by running for mayor - and having quite a struggle at that. Anonymously, "Grant" decides to pitch in and together they try to manipulate the situation and the town's crooked judge "Harkley" (Porter Hall) to their advantage. Morgan is on fine form here, he has a bit of a glint in his eye and the film revolves around that. Jean Rogers adds a little glamour, and provides a little of the obligatory romance with Carson as their challenge gathers pace.
