Those who fight are not sure of winning. But those who don't fight have already lost. The story of Etienne Lantier, enlisted in the Montsou mines. He meets the Maheu family and falls in love with their daughter Catherine. She is courted by Chaval, a brutal worker. When the Compagnie des Mines cuts wages, Etienne, already revolted by the misery, takes up the cause. Dreaming of justice, he calls a strike. As the weeks went by, the starving strikers fought back, but, victims of violent repression, resigned themselves to working.

In Montsou, the miners work hard and are not spared from accidents that sometimes prove fatal. Etienne Lantier, in his twenties, arrives from Lille to try and make his mark after a series of incidents. He is hired at the mine and discovers harsh working conditions. The newcomer is not insensitive to the charms of Catherine, also coveted by Chaval. La Maheude struggles to feed the ten family members living under her roof. Hennebeau, the mine owner, is accountable to the company for his management.

2. Episode 2

Hennebeau announces to the miners that new work sites will be opened, but there are fewer of them than teams and the price of a skip is set too low. As anger rumbles, Etienne tries to convince the local residents to set up a solidarity fund. The Maheu family's grandfather is no longer fit for work, putting a severe strain on the already strained family budget. The Maheudes suggest that Etienne come and live with them in exchange for rent, a decision that does not sit well with Catherine.

The strike breaks out and is particularly well attended at all the pits. It even gained momentum in the face of inflexible management. It was the beginning of another hellish period on the horizon, that of hunger. The meagre savings of the revolting group would not last long. All the more so as the company has sent in its heavyweights, commanded by Bressan, to break up the movement. Faced with these threats, some decided to give up and head for the Jean Bart shaft, where the miners had not stopped work. Chaval, for example, forces Catherine - whom he now has under his thumb - to come with him. Faced with the risk of demobilization, Etienne manages to keep the miners together.

4. Episode 4

The march quickly took on the air of a revolution. At the Jean Bart shaft, strikers destroyed the installations, forcing the miners to the surface. The crowd of miners then headed for the other shafts. Everywhere they went, they engaged in acts of vandalism, despite their fear of the gendarmes. Tempers flared. The antagonism between Etienne and Chaval, who wants to break the strike, reaches a climax. They come to blows with knives. Catherine steps in and defends Chaval. Still in love, Etienne experiences this as a heartbreak.

5. Episode 5

Despite all this suffering, the workers still refuse to give up the strike. Perceived as the strike leader by the authorities, Etienne had to go into hiding to escape the gendarmes. He only goes out at night to join his comrades. The situation takes a dramatic turn for the worse when Belgian workers arrive from overseas to restart production at Le Voreux.

6. Episode 6

Etienne realized his failure and fell into despair. Some, like Maheude, don't want to give up, but they're in the minority. Most agreed to go back to work. But they don't know that Souvarine, true to his principles, has sabotaged the Voreux shaft. As the miners descend in the morning, an accident occurs.
